Today I am sharing two free resources I have created for teachers in Quebec teaching the Quebec Education Program Elementary. These documents have been a long time in the making for me. I myself am an elementary ELA teacher in Quebec who spent years feeling confused and alone when it came to planning ad understanding the QEP.
There’s nothing worst than feeling confused AND alone. This is exactly how I felt in my pre-service teaching years and especially my first few years in a Quebec elementary school. When I searched Google for “Quebec Education Program Elementary” support, I always came up short.
I wanted help!
Luckily, I developed a passion for understanding curriculum and curriculum design. So I started teaching myself! I began looking at other curriculums and how their skills/standards were organized.
I Re-Organized the Quebec Education Program-Elementary
If you read my blog post “5 Struggles If you Teach English Education in Quebec-#5 is So Relatable!”, you’ll know my biggest qualm with the QEP was its organization of it. There’s the QEP curriculum doc which organizes the skills by 4 competencies:
- Reading
- Writing
- Media
- Communication
But then there’s the Progression of Learning document, which I believe is more widely used by schools, yet is organized completely differently. I recently did a poll on my Instagram stories, asking teachers which document they used more, the QEP program document or the Progression of Learning doc. 100% of the teachers I polled said they used the Progression of Learning. My guess is that teachers like this document because it lays out what needs to be taught in each cycle in an easier-to-digest format than the QEP ELA document. Yet the PoL can be confusing, especially for new teachers. There, skills are organized by:
- Conventions of Written and Media Language 4
- Language-Learning Processes 6
- Text Types, Structures and Features
For example, reading and writing skills for different writing genres (narrative, self-expressive texts, etc…) are combined in one grid. Also, the skills in the two documents are different!
Why the different formats and content?
That’s why I have created this free handbook for the Quebec education program elementary teachers need to simplify the curriculum for themselves! I chose to combine the skills from both the Quebec Education Program doc and the Progression of Learning in one simple-to-use PDF document.

I Created A Year’s Worth of Plans According to the Quebec Education Plan Elementary
As I mentioned before, I love curriculum planning! So I created the free Year-at-a-Glance document for elementary ELA teachers!
Why? I wanted to create a year’s worth of plans for every elementary cycle to make the lives of teachers in Quebec easier.
This document includes a two-page year-at-a-glance for both Cycle 2 ELA and Cycle 3 ELA (currently working on Cycle 1). Inside, I have organized the year in4 terms, each with two units (for a total of 8 units). Units range from 12 days to 28 days. For each unit, I provide:
- The duration in days
- The reading focus
- The writing focus
- the Cross-Curricular Competencies covered
- A brief description of the theme and overview of unit
- And a description of the summative assessment

Looking for more planning for the year I pulled the Year-At-A-Glance pages from my Scope and Sequence products for Cycles 2 and 3. Click here for the Cycle 2 Scope and Sequence, or click here to check out the Cycle 3 Scope and Sequence!
